Dietary Modifications for Hometown Diner

We strive to accommodate the needs of all families. Below please find recommended substitutes for our Rad Families with dietary restrictions, compliments of Stephanie Dreyer at VeegMama, a lifestyle blog sharing new approaches to healthy living through food, wellness, and personal fulfillment.

Gluten-Free

Chocolate Peppermint Crunch Cookies >> Use gluten-free flour.

Cheesy Chili Mac >> Use gluten-free macaroni or pasta.

Zucchini Fries with Ranch Dip >> Use gluten-free panko bread crumbs, such as Ian’s or Aleia’s (available on Amazon). Alternatively, you can make your own by crushing Rice Chex cereal. Use gluten-free flour.

Dairy Allergy

Baked Denver Omelette >> Use dairy-free milk and dairy-free cheddar cheese shreds, such as Daiya, So Delicious, Parmela or Follow Your Heart.

Cheesy Chili Mac >> Use dairy-free cheddar cheese shreds, such as Daiya, So Delicious, Parmela or Follow Your Heart.

Zucchini Fries with Ranch Dip >>

  • For the fries, use a dairy-free Parmesan cheese, such as Go Veggie! Foods.
  • For the dip, use a dairy-free sour cream, such as Tofutti.

Milkshake Mash-up >>

  • Use dairy-free milk and ice cream.
  • Use So Delicious CocoWhip or Soy Whip instead of whipped cream. Alternatively, you can make your own by refrigerating a can of coconut milk 8 hours or overnight. Remove the milk from the fridge without shaking the can, and remove the lid. Scrape out the top, thickened cream (reserve the liquid for another use). Beat the coconut cream with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Stir in ¼ - ¾ cup powdered sugar and ½ teaspoon of vanilla (if desired).

Egg Allergy

Baked Denver Omelette >> After step 8, combine 1 14-ounce block of tofu, ½ cup water, and 2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast in a food processor. Blend until smooth. Pour the mixture into the baking pan over the vegetables. Bake for 30-40 minutes.

Zucchini Fries with Ranch Dip >>

  • For the fries, use Follow Your Heart’s VeganEgg in place of 2 eggs. (To make 2 eggs, mix 4 level tablespoons of VeganEgg with 1 cup of cold water. Whisk vigorously.)
  • For the dip, use an eggless mayonnaise.

Vegetarian

Baked Denver Omelette >> Use vegan ham slices, such as Yves Veggie Ham, Lightlife Smart Deli Ham, Sweet Earth Harmless Ham Deli Slices, or Tofurky Smoked Ham Style Deli Slices. Alternatively, omit the ham and use chopped tomatoes instead.

Cheesy Chili Mac >> Instead of ground beef, use a meatless product, such as Lightlife Smart Ground, Yves Veggie Ground Round, or Beyond Meat Beyond Burger or Beefy Crumbles. Alternatively, you could use another can of kidney beans or a can of pinto and/or black beans. Use vegetable broth instead of beef broth.
